Report from the final meeting of the project, held in Lithuania

On 29th May to 4th of June 2011 in Akmene, Lithuania, the final meeting of the project "Development of good practice and innovative teaching methods of adult and citizenship education" was held. Participating partners came from Poland, Turkey, and Lithuania. There were also additional guests from Norway. (10.06.2011)

The role of the host of the meeting belonged to the Akmenes rajono savivaldybes suaugusiuju mokymo centras represented by Mrs. Birute Baltutiene

The main scope of the project touches upon the issues related to educating adults. Therefore, the Polish partner – the educational center netEDUKACJA – emphasized the need to increase the competence and the resource base which would improve the educational work with adult students. This approach was reflected in the presentation of the Polish partner, which was given during the meeting.

The Polish delegation consisted of: Grażyna Król, Barbara Dzik, Aleksandra Maliszewska, Piotr Maliszewski, Grażyna Skalczyńska, and Joanna Warchołowska-Głouszek.

One very important and measurable element of the conference was the exchange of experiences regarding achievements, successes and difficulties of educating others. Particularly, some problems tied with the difficult situation of the education system in Akmene were discussed in detail. Due to the emigration of many young people (in search for employment) the demographic profile of the region has changed. The reality in which adults or people in their retirement are the majority group of the society has forced the educational offers to adjust to the situation.

Among the things really worth noticing is the fact of the intended subjectivity and individualization of the education process on its every stage. The use of the UE’s resources enables not only the intellectual development but the artistic and social development of the Akemen region too. With pride, the hosts presented a Lithuania kindergarten in which children divided into small groups are developing their skills among green gardens and unique toys. Two more facilities were presented also (a middle school and a local community center) both utilizing friendly atmosphere as the cornerstone of the process of education.

One more regional aspect is worth noticing here. Deeply ingrained sense of identity creates a strong relation within the community and results in big attachment to tradition. That is the reason for such a visible emphasis of relations with history and the past. This is a conscious policy of the city’s authorities to consequently build the awareness among young people on the place they’re live in.

Another positive experience from the meeting was the possibility to get to know Lithuania and the people who live there. Seeing the important landmarks and places that have had their role in the country’s history was a great experience. The hosts were constantly surprising us with their hospitality. The meeting was planned in great detail, securing time for many additional activities, so everyone could learn something about the region and its characteristics.
